The closest stations to Morzine ski resort are Cluses and Thonon-les-Bains.
You can use the Morzine - SnowCarbon Journey Planner to view recommended, hand-researched journeys from London to Morzine by train for winter 2025-26.
The SnowCarbon Journey Planner shows journeys the most convenient journeys for skiers. The schedules are hand researched, rather than subject to the quirks of rail-website algorithms (which often hide possible journeys).
Where rail websites only show you travel options once tickets are on sale, the SnowCarbon Journey Planner can help you plan holidays by showing you predicted schedules for the entire winter season ahead.
Once tickets are on sale, rail company and ticketing websites such as Eurostar, Rail Europe, Trainline, Deutche Bahn and SBB, are also useful for researching journey schedules (and for booking tickets) too. However, bear in mind that these websites don’t always show you the most convenient schedules. And they are not the only way to book tickets (more about this below).
When to book train travel to Morzine
Tickets for Eurostar trains go on sale 6 - 8 months in advance. They used to go on sale 330 days in advance, but in April 2024 Eurostar quietly changed this. Whereas previously, you could reliably count forward 330 days to know when you could book, now you can't, because 6 -8 months in advance is quite vague and variable. So it's a matter of checking the Eurostar website (or asking a rail-booking agent).
Tickets for TGVs and other trains within France go on sale approximately 60 to 120 days in advance, with dates announced in advance (see table below).
Independent rail travel in France |
|
Travel period | Tickets go on sale |
13 Dec 2025 - 07 Jan 2026 | 01 October 2025* |
08 Jan - 30 March 2026 | 12 November 2025* |
31 March - 11 May 2026 | 21 January 2026* |
*these are predicted dates, not 100% confirmed yet
NB: Normally tickets go on sale for trains in France at approximately 06:00 French time (i.e. 05:00 UK time). SNCF prefers not to give an exact time, because they say that it sometime the time for tickets to load onto their booking system can vary.
When important dates that trains go on sale are confirmed, we send out a newsletter so that you are in the know, in advance. You can sign up for SnowCarbon's newsletter at the bottom of any page on the SnowCarbon website.
How much does it cost?
Predicting rail fares isn't an exact science. In the past few years rail fares have risen and also become more difficult to forecast.
However, the range below is our best guesstimate for return rail travel from London to Cluses and to Thonon-les-Bains, per adult, in standard class:
Holiday date | Adult return fare |
Feb half term | £380 - £620 |
Christmas, New Year, Easter | £270 - £520 |
Off peak dates | £250 - £390 |
Children aged 4-11 pay 30% less than adults | |
Under 4s: free without a reserved seat |
As mentioned, the earlier you book, the lower the prices.
How to book – online or agency?
Generally, the process of booking a train journey from the UK to the Alps isn’t quite as simple as booking a flight.
Rail operators in the UK and mainland Europe have made a dog’s dinner of integrating their booking systems.
As a result, don't treat as gospel the journey options or prices you see when researching rail travel online. It can be worth checking more than one source.
For journeys that involve two or more trains, more suitable schedules or better fares might exist. Sometimes, journeys or trains that are definitely bookable don't show up online or are marked as 'not available'. Yet the rail-booking websites don't give travellers any warning about this problem.
Moreover, if you fancy extra time (in Paris, for example) either when changing trains or for a stopover, then you may find that online booking - which automatically minimises the time between trains - isn’t always suitable.
One solution is to ask an expert rail-booking agent to plan your journey and book your tickets. Using sophisticated booking systems, experienced staff can tailor-make your rail journey according to your needs (more about rail-booking agents later in this guide).
Booking online

For some Eurostar + TGV journeys, online booking works fine.
But remember that some journey or fare options just don’t show up online.
And if you want to stopover in Paris, or just have extra time changing trains, online booking generally is too inflexible to allow this, unless you split the journey into two separate bookings.
Eurostar.com
Eurostar’s website can be useful for the Eurostar legs of the journey and for some Eurostar + TGV journeys. But it offers a limited range of destinations and doesn’t include local TER trains.
Rail Europe
An online ticket-booking agent with a relatively easy to use website, with well-written guides.
Trainline
An online ticket-booking agent, similarly with a fairly intuitive website and guidance.
SNCF Connect
This is French rail company SNCF’s booking website. Not particularly user friendly and might drive you nuts! But it’s another option.
Booking with an expert rail-booking agent
A good option for booking independent rail travel is to contact an expert rail-booking agent.
They have experienced staff who use more sophisticated booking systems than consumer-facing websites. They can reserve tickets as soon as they go on sale and access rail options and fares you might not find online.
In cases where tickets for various legs of a journey go on sale at different times, these agents can hold tickets for a train (e.g. Eurostar) while waiting for tickets for another train (e.g. TGV) to go on sale, and then combine them to give you a no-commitment quote at the best available fare.
For this service, these agents charge a modest fee (see below). This can be good value for money, considering the benefits of their service.
Below are SnowCarbon’s tried-and-tested recommendations for rail-booking agents. They have helped absolutely loads of skiers book travel and we are very glad they exist.

Trainseurope charges a fee of £10 per traveller.

Group bookings for 10 or more people

If you are a group of 10 or more, you can get discounts on your fare. These are normally around 10%, but sometimes more.
Tickets for 10 or more people can't be booked online. However, agents such as Railtrail or Trainseurope can book group travel for you.
