Skiers in beautiful scenery inLe Collet

It’s a great feeling to look out the window and see snow in the UK this morning. I could almost imagine I was in the Alps. It’s going to be lovely to wander around and see snow up close.

The more you look at things closely, the more you discover. When I first began researching rail travel to ski resorts 20 years ago, I was amazed at the variety of destinations that could be reached.

Back then, there wasn’t much information about this. If you asked most British skiers about where they could get to by train, they would almost always cite resorts in the Tarentaise – because the Eurostar Ski Train and the old Rail Europe Snowtrain went only there.

These days, more skiers are getting wise to the huge variety of other destinations that are easily accessed by train. One of these is the Isere region in the southern French Alps.  The closest train station is Grenoble, only three hours by TGV from Paris. The transfers from Grenoble stations to the resorts are a bit longer, but the bus connections from Grenoble are timed to link with the TGV trains.

The region has some wonderful resorts, and I’ve been working with Isère Tourism to create a new section on Snowcarbon about this destination - and how to get there.  It’ll give you insights into some resorts you’ve heard of, and some you haven’t. Places to consider for this winter, or next.

The wonderful ski journalist Rupert Mellor has written the resort reviews. I hope you find the guides useful, enjoyable and inspiring. I’ve travelled to Alpe d’Huez by train with friends before – and had a brilliant time.  I used some of the footage that we took on journeys (plus some nice drone footage that I managed to get from rail companies) to create this film. Enjoy the snow, wherever it is.

Best wishes,
