Restaurants in town

The main village of Le Grand Bornard and Chinaillon together have about 30 restaurants and nearly 40 bars. Les Saytels (00 33 450 02 20 16) is popular, with a good value set menu.

La Bournerie (00 33 450 27 00 28) is part of a 200-year-old farm and is the place for cheese-laden Savoyard specialities such as tartiflette, raclette and fondue, while Au Bon Vieux Temps (00 33 450 02 32 38), in the heart of the old village, should be visited for its “Farce”, a dish of potatoes, bacon and dried fruit.

At La Ferme de Lormay (00 33 450 02 24 29), some way down the valley, chef Albert Bonamy smokes his own hams and salmon. Another favourite is Le Chalet Venay (00 33 450 27 02 01) at Chinaillon, which can be part of a snowshoe tour.

Mountain restaurants

There are 17 restaurants on the slopes. Above Chinaillon, L'Igloo (00 33 450 27 02 67) has fine views and traditional food. Non-skiers can reach it by taxi to meet up with friends.

Le Chalet Venay (00 33 450 27 02 01) is as good at lunchtime as it is in the evening, while A la Ferme du Pépé (00 33 450 02 76 63) has a great atmosphere, complete with log fire. Le Roc des Arces (00 33 450 27 03 43) near the Rosay gondola has good food and a fine sun terrace.

Nightlife

Le Grand Bornard  is not a partygoer's resort, but bars can become lively. Les Deux Guides has a British pub atmosphere, while Le Thovet has a good selection of wine by the glass. Le Baron Noir nightclub in Chinaillon is often going strong into the early hours.
